The Designer

Britta Kjerkegaard has dreamt of designing gorgeous gowns since she was a child. Born and raised in Denmark, she would spend time drawing glamorous women in dramatic, over-the-top gowns and daydreaming about big city lights – a far cry from her idyllic, yet small hometown in the Danish countryside.

After finishing her basic design training Britta realised she needed more creative freedom and hands-on practice, which prompted her to move to London when she was 18-years-old. Here, she gained an invaluable amount of experience over the years working with London designers, talented atelier teams, and observing the ins and outs of running a successful fashion label. Her career has led to working in Milan and Copenhagen before returning to London and launching her own label in 2003 for eveningwear, followed by the opening of The Couture Gallery in Kensington, dedicated to bridalwear, in 2008.

Britta’s transition into luxury bridal fashion happened organically, when a friend’s sister requested that she design her wedding dress. Despite some initial nerves, Britta fell in love with the process of creating an original, one-of-a-kind gown for such a momentous occasion. “I realised, that this was exactly what I wanted to do,” she says. “Creating not just a dress, but THE dress.”

Today, Britta’s creations at The Couture Gallery reflect her own tastes and aesthetics as a Danish designer, but with an uncompromising sense of universal appeal. Not only is every gown intended to be an impeccably designed and masterfully finished – comfort and practicality are also important factors.

“Some designers create couture gowns that may be a bit heavy or tricky to wear,” explains Britta, “but ours are surprisingly comfortable, very light, and move with the body. For the bride on her wedding day, I want her to be able to just put on the dress knowing it fits perfectly, that she looks amazing, and then forget all about it and really just enjoy her day!”

By offering a personal service from the first sketch to the finished dress, Britta ensures the couture process is an exciting and inspiring journey. A unique experience that the designer remains extremely passionate about: “Working together with a bride to create the perfect dress is by far my favourite part of the job. It's wonderfully exciting and creative. Nothing is more satisfying or fulfilling than having played a small part in making someone’s dream come true, creating not just a dress, but the memory of a lifetime..."
